If there is a celebrity who has inspired many people to take a proactive approach towards their weight and body image, it is Jonah Hill.  The actor, producer, comedian, director, and screenwriter is best renowned for his yo-yo-ing weight character since his first role in I Heart Huckabees (2004).

Jonah Hill Feldstein hails from a showbiz family where his dad, Richard Feldstein, was Gun ‘N Roses’ tour accountant and his mother, Sharon Feldstein, a costume and fashion designer.

 He was born on December 20, 1083, in Los Angeles, California. His sister is also an actress, and his brother manages one of the biggest bands, Maroon 5.

Hill was raised in a creative atmosphere where he conceptualized the dream of becoming a writer.

After completing his high school in Los Angeles, Hill went to New York to study drama at The New School. He started writing plays when in college and staged them in a bar. 

At The New School, he became friends with Dustin Hoffman’s kids, who introduced him to their father. Through this friendship, he got his first movie audition and later a role in the I Heart Huckabees (2004). 

Later, he appeared in Jud Apatow’s The 40-Year-Old Virgin (2005) and Knocked Up (2007). His breakthrough came in the film Superbad. The film opened up roles in several other comedies, including Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008) and Funny People (2009).

However, his first straight role came in Moneyball (2011), which got him nominated for an Academy Award for best-supporting actor. He also received lots of praise for his epic character in the film 21 Jump Street (2012) and its sequel, 22 Jump Street, in 2014.

He was featured in several other movies, but The Wolf of Wall Street earned him the second Oscar nomination. 

His subsequent movies include True Story (2015), War Dogs (2016), Don’t Worry, and He Won’t Get Far on Foot (2018). He directed and wrote the Mid90s (2018), starred in the TV series Maniac (2018), and played a comic role in Set The Beach Bum (2019). 

Despite all his career achievements, Jonah Hill still struggled with weight gain. However, against all odds, he managed to shed his excess body weight and attain a lean athlete physique.

In all the interviews he attended, Jonah Hill never spoke of any structured workout plan. Instead, he emphasized diversified workouts that combined running, boxing, jujitsu, and resistance training. In short, here is how Hill went from being chubby to having a lean, athletic body. 


When Hill appeared before Kidd Kraddick, he joked that he “started running physically instead of always running emotionally.” 

While the Jonah Hill of the past would never jog, leave alone running, he came to discover it was the easiest way to burn calories and ease into exercising. 

Running not only helps burn calories when you’re in session but even long after the workout. It also suppresses your appetite and leads to reduced food intake. 

When Hill started running, he started noticing a few changes, which motivated him to keep pushing. 


Hill reiterates that working out should be something you build up gradually. You start small and work your way up. 

In his case, Hill started with 10 pushups daily and eventually worked his way up to 100.  He still does 100 pushups to ensure that he maintains a toned and lean physique. 


Dabbing into the Brazilian self-defense martial art Jiu-jitsu also played a crucial role in helping Hill cut down weight and get a toned body. 

Although he started slow, he formed a routine of participating in Jiu-jitsu training 4 to 5 days a week. 

After sharing the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu first stripe on Instagram, Hill confessed that he felt insecure in his teen years whenever he saw Jiu-Jitsu practitioners in action. 


Jonah Hill also took an interest in boxing and would be seen at the celeb hot spot, Gotham Gym. 

In photos on social media, the actor can be seen shadow boxing, jabbing, and trying combo moves with his trainer. 

Boxing was an incredible routine to add to his workout plate since its impact is felt in the entire body, not just the arms and legs. 


For those looking to get the Jonah Hill shape, it’s easier said than done. It requires commitment, passion, and determination. Hill said that he had to spare more than 8 hours every week to do a combination of boxing, running Jiu-jitsu, and pushups. 


Jonah Hill said that a call to Channing Tatum, a friend they starred together in 21 Jump Street, might have been the best thing he ever did. Channing recommended that he gets a trainer and nutritionist before embarking on a weight loss journey.

When he sought advice from his co-actor and friend Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill was aware that some of his eating habits contributed to his fluctuating weight. 

Therefore, his first step to cutting the excess weight was to avoid all the unhealthy food options and change his habits. He went ahead to get a nutritionist who told him to track everything going into his plate. 

Therefore, Hill’s diet routine is not structured but a coordinated approach to taking foods with less cholesterol, fewer fats, and low processed sugar. 


Japanese Sushi 

After Hill cut down his pizza and beer intake, he started eating sushi instead. This Japanese dish is highly nutritious and relatively low in calories. 

 For instance, you’ll be surprised to learn that a six-piece sushi roll that incorporates fish and vegetables has approximately 200 to 250 calories. 

The Japanese sushi can be healthy depending on what you order and the accompanying side dish. 

For example, switching the mayo and tempura with veggies and omega-3-rich fish, such as tuna and salmon, ensures that your diet has enough proteins and nutrient-and-vitamin-rich vegetables.  

Once he learned the secret, Hill became a sushi aficionado and would be seen in one of his favorite joints in New York City, known as Sushi of Gari. 

Writing Down Everything 

The first thing the nutritionist told Hill to do was to note down everything that went into his mouth. He would then share the food log with the nutritionist and get advice on what to drop and add to his diet.
