The beauty of working out often lies when you’re within the comfort of your home. As an athlete that’s dedicated to strength and conditioning for my triathlon events, I’ve found a new appreciation for the convenience of spending my workout routines at home, rather than subscribing to a gym membership. I’ve had mine on pause for a while now, due to the pandemic and all.

After all, a gym membership gets more expensive in the long run, whereas home gym equipment is a practical purchase that will become more of a good investment. Moreover, it is easy to access these at your own convenience because it’s just within the walls of your home. Plus, you get to have your own privacy!

After being on a fitness journey for a long time, I’ve realized that there are numerous misconceptions and questions regarding gym equipment. Most people have confused gym equipment for gym machines and I can clearly see the reason why.

When starting up your own home gym, it’s truly difficult to pick which to get first most especially when you’re all hyped up to purchase all the equipment you can find—trust me, I know the feeling.

If you’ve been doing your workout routine for quite some time now, then you probably already have the list on your head. However, for those who are still in the limbo of which to buy, I have created a list of the best home gym equipment that I think are great for overall conditioning but more than that – to start losing that stubborn weight!

Best Home Gym Equipment For Weight Loss Compared and Reviewed

#1 - ProForm Pro 2000 Treadmill

Of course, what is a home gym without the superior treadmill in the corner? This ProForm Pro 2000 Treadmill is a good home option because of its versatility. Additionally, this isn’t only best for beginners who are just keeping up with their cardio exercise, but this is also good for professional runners and as well as casual runners.

On the technical side, this treadmill has a 3.5-horsepower motor, a wide belt deck, and has the dimensions of: 39.15” W x 77.16” D x 70” H. This treadmill has a capacity of 300 lbs, has a 10-inch full-color touchscreen that can detect your heart rate monitor, and it is even iFit enabled!

The treadmill and its functionality itself have good reviews because its versatility is exceptional. There are 40 workouts that are preloaded in the machine and the technicalities are easy to use even for those who are not really tech-savvy. The machine is straightforward, hence, you can already begin with your workout without having to thoroughly study the whole machine.

As a runner through-and-through, treadmills are a must in my home. Also my wife uses it, so the benefits are there for me. Ultimately you’ll need to work out if this expensive purchase is worth it for you … or if you’re happy to just jump rope.

Some reviews have shown that they have experienced a slow boot with their screens. Additionally, the LCD display only allows iFit and there are no actual web browsers that can be displayed.

#2 - ATIVAFIT Adjustable Dumbbells for Working Out

The ATIVAFIT offers up 4 different weights, and there are two options that you can choose from. The 27.5 pound or 44.0 pound options. These adjustable dumbbells are boasting a contoured soft grip handle which should provide maximum stability from my experience.

These dumbbells are extremely easy to change, with just a push and slide technology that’s both fast and safe to use. It doesn’t take up much space in the living room at all either. It comes in black and has a total size of 13.39″ x 7.87″ x 5.91.

The unfortunate part about this option is that it only comes with one. If you’re after two dumbbells then you’re going to have to make a purchase for two which can bring the price up quite quickly, this is something that’s caught out a few other consumers that thought it would come in a “set”.

Others have said that the dumbbells are known to make quite a bit of noise during the whole process of attaching and de-attaching them. So if you’re someone that likes to work out in a quite home in the morning then it might not be the most ideal option, I know me with having a little baby it’s definitely not.

#3 - TheraBand Resistance Band Set

At any time that you feel like your workouts are being a tad bit comfortable, that usually implies that you need to add more sets, more weight or in general, DO more. Perhaps, it’s time to step up the level of exercise because you’re definitely a step above your fitness level.

For such circumstances, I employ resistance bands on my training and one gym equipment that I highly recommend is the TheraBand Exercise resistance bands.

Though I personally don’t have this specific brand, I definitely have this on my wish list because of the relatively numerous reviews this product has. If you’ve given it a go previously, can you share your feedback in the comments below for our readers?

They’re not just thin and lightweight, but they also offer a great amount of resistance for all types of workouts you want to use this with. Not only are they superb with its functions, but they’re also amazingly affordable.

This kit contains bands that have a weight range of 2.4 pounds up to 21.3 pounds, leaving more options for you to choose from when you want a higher intensity workout. Moreover, the wide range also helps every individual coming from different fitness levels—from amateurs to advanced athletes and fitness enthusiasts. These resistance bands can be really helpful in sorts of workouts, from strength training and conditioning to yoga.

This specific brand offers both latex and non-latex bands. Non-latex bands are more ideal for people who want to increase more of their strength and flexibility. Moreover, non-latex bands are suitable for people with latex allergies.

This band is also highly portable because it is not a loop band, hence, you can tie them in a loop at whatever diameter you desire and you can untie them when using it for a different workout. A number of customer reviews have commended its durability because despite tying and untying them multiple times, there are no signs of breakage with this unit.

#4 - XYLsports Jump Rope

When talking about jumping ropes, I can’t help but have childhood flashbacks when everyone used to do jumping ropes for fun. Nowadays, jumping ropes make for a great full-body exercise.

This 9’8” jump rope can cater to all heights because of its adjustable feature. Also, this certain brand prides itself on its comfortable foam grips.

I’m currently using a different jump rope and I’m having a hard time using it because of its short length, and seeing this certain brand made me wish that I could get to own one because of its adjustable length.

This swings smoothly even with less effort, ensuring a comfortable workout. Moreover, these uncoil easily, thus tangling won’t be a problem most especially when you’re already on your jump streak.

#5 - Exerpeutic Folding Upright Bike

A simple and affordable stationary bike can be a good starter home gym equipment. The Exerpeutic Folding Upright Bike is not only easy to store, but it’s perfect for beginners. However, this could not be as challenging for advanced athletes and fitness enthusiasts.

This bike is easily adjustable and can cater to 5’3” to 6’1” users. Moreover, it has dimensions of: 31” L x 19” W x 46” H, and when folded: 22” L x 20” W x 55.5” H. Since it is compact, it provides more space options in your home gym.

The Exerpeutic Folding Upright Bike comes with an LCD display that can read distance, calories, time, speed, and pulse. Moreover, there are hand pulse sensors so you can monitor your heart rate.

Some reviews have complained that the rubber pedal strap is not durable enough because it snapped at a certain mile during usage. Moreover, others are complaining about a squeaking and clicking noise when they have adjusted the resistance at a higher rate and when they were at a farther mile.

My Number One Pick

Without sounding too bias, I believe that the ProForm Treadmill hits the top of my list. This is because, for me, there is nothing better than working up a sweat from a run. Not only do you work up a sweat but you build on your leg and core muscles at the same time. If you don’t like running and your thing is strength, then Dumbbells are a great way to do circuit workouts and work up a sweat. The choice is yours!

Buyers Guide For Home Gym Equipment To Help With Weight Loss

Home gym equipment varies in sizes, uses, and functions. Choosing the suitable equipment for your home gym can be really tricky because you have to understand that there are underlying factors when purchasing one. Because of the wide variety, it is only important to access which factors to consider when choosing the best home gym equipment, especially for weight loss.

Type of Gym Equipment

Of course, there are different types of gym equipment for different uses. The functionality of a single equipment varies on the specific type. For instance, a stationary bike is entirely different from a resistance band. Hence, you can’t really opt one for another because the two are evidently serving different purposes.

Generally, fitness equipment are categorized into two: strength equipment, and cardio equipment. Hence, it is only required of you to thoroughly search for which type of equipment that will best suit your fitness needs.

If you’re looking for cardio equipment, the ProForm Pro 2000 Treadmill and Exerpeutic Folding Upright Bike can best cater to your needs most especially when you’re working out for losing or maintaining weight.

The XYLsports Jump Rope is also one of the best equipment if you’re looking for a portable equipment that can give you an overall workout. If strength equipment is your preference, then the dumbbells is the best option for you.

Personal Fitness Needs

Evaluating your fitness needs is one of the most important factors before purchasing your home gym equipment. After all, your home gym should maximize its functionality and not just a decor at your house. Certainly, the demands of a person losing weight are different from a person who’s muscle-building.

Your fitness needs are your basis on which equipment to purchase and which not to include in your cart. I know the feeling of getting too excited about buying gym equipment that you want to buy just to fill up your home gym. However, buying too much equipment with the same purpose might be redundant, not to mention a waste of money.

If you’re an advanced athlete or a fitness enthusiast and you’re looking for a higher intensity workout, then you might want to look into equipment for resistance training. Resistance training is a physical activity that causes the muscles to go against an external training to heighten your strength and power training. This also promotes muscle endurance.

If resistance training is your priority, then the TheraBand Exercise resistance band could be the best option for you. These are portable enough and can be adapted to most workouts; from glute to arms and back workouts.

Space Availability

I know that space availability is one of the biggest hindrances when it comes to purchasing home gym equipment. Sometimes, we are not blessed with a luxurious space to fit in enough workout equipment, hence opting to buy foldable and portable equipment is the better solution.

Considering space availability is essential because I know the stress you get when you see a disorganized and cluttered home space because the equipment is everywhere. Analyzing the availability of space means measuring the dimensions of the space you want to allot for your specific equipment.

Foldable machines like the Exerpeutic Folding Upright Bike may be the best option for you if you want machine equipment. You might want to look into ATIVAFIT if you want a strength training equipment that could also fit in your limited space.

But if you really have restricted space, portable equipment is made available in the market such as the XYLsports Jump Rope and TheraBand Exercise. These equipment offer cardio training and strength training respectively without having to consume your limited home space.

Equipment Features

Personally, when I’m using machine equipment, I like it when I can see the calories burned, heart rate, and everything and anything that I have to know to watch my progress. However, equipment features do not only cover the cool aspects of the unit, but it also covers safety features such as adjustable straps and whatnot.

Since you’ll be buying gym equipment that you’ll be constantly purchasing, you definitely should invest in a unit that ensures a comfortable experience and workout training. There are additional features in your gym equipment that you should look into that makes it entirely different from other products in the market.

If you’re looking for the cool side of equipment features, then the Exerpeutic Folding Upright Bike may be something you want to look at because of its iFit and Bluetooth compatibility LCD Display. However, some have complained about its non-durable foot straps that do not exactly promote a heightened security for your workout.

If you’re considering a security feature as your equipment feature, then the XYLsports Jump Rope is a good option because of its adjustable feature. In this way, you won’t have to worry about tripping when you’re using your jump rope at home.

Equipment Repair and Maintenance

Buying an equipment machine is no joke when it comes to its price. Cashing out a considerable amount calls for a high-quality product. I know the frustration when you have to pay additional charges for repair and maintenance expenses, and that sucks!

These products better offer warranties most especially when they’re machines because they could be really risky and could pose danger when they’re not functioning properly. Even your portable equipment can pose risks when you receive a poor quality product. These risks may temporarily injure you, or worse permanently affect your performance.

When purchasing online, it is undoubtedly true that it is difficult to check and assess the machine before adding it to your cart. Hence, portable equipment is much more recommended when you’re buying online because it only requires minimal maintenance and hardly needs repair.

You might want to consider looking into XYLsports Jump Rope or the TheraBand Exercise resistance band if you’re looking for portable equipment. The ATIVAFIT Adjustable Dumbbells aren’t exactly as portable as the other two, however, these dumbbells are also low maintenance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Home Gym Equipment For Weight Loss

Q: What home gyms take up the least amount of space?

A: There are available portable equipment like jump ropes, resistance bands, pull-up bars, and whatnot. If you prefer equipment machines, there are also foldable machines like rowers, stationary bikes, treadmills, and whatnot.

Q: What is better: Weight stacks or bands?

A: Weight stacks are definitely better in some aspects because of its safety feature. Your steel plates cannot malfunction, but your bands can snap or break. Also, bands can weaken and also wear over time. However, if by better you mean cheaper, then bands are definitely the answer.

Q: What’s the difference between a spin bike and a stationary bike?

A: The difference between a spin bike and stationary bike lies in how the flywheel mechanism operates. Spin bikes have a heavier flywheel, whereas stationary bikes are a much newer invention in the market. The stationary bikes are made to resemble a regular bike with smooth maneuverability, while spin bikes require the rider to work harder to get the bike moving.

Conclusion

Home gyms are difficult to set up, especially when you’re just beginning with your fitness journey. Truly, you should not only look for equipment that is user-friendly and beginner-friendly but also look for the equipment that works best for you.
